This student has taken up a course in pharmaceutical sciences with the dream that she can find a placement in the growing healthcare sector, and can thus rise above her difficult circumstances. Her father is disabled and has not been going to work for some time. Her younger brother, who works as a driver, brings in the only income for the family. His monthly earnings of about Rs.5,000 is insufficient to make ends meet. A young sister is studying to be a nurse with help from some relatives.

The family has a roof of their own but the living conditions are very poor. The student had, in her first year, received some financial help from college mates and college staff but is unable to pay the fees in the second year. Teachers have said that the student is regular to her classes and is keen on her studies. Of the total pending fees of Rs.48,000 Aalayam plans to assist the student with a sum of Rs.40,000.
